Temperatures are below zero in much of the country. It is slippery on the streets, delays and cancellations are expected in public transport. It will stay frozen for the next few days.
During the night, temperatures in much of Switzerland fell into the frost range. Cold polar air has reached Switzerland, as Meteonews writes. In many places, temperatures will stay below freezing all day starting Thursday; wait several days of ice.
According to Meteonews, only some snowfall will fall on Thursday and an improvement in the weather is expected with more sunshine from the north. Despite the sun, it is still freezing cold: in Zurich it is not more than -2 degrees, in Bern -3 degrees. Only in Ticino does the northern foehn ensure temperatures of up to 12 degrees.
Cold air sometimes brings fresh snow with it in the morning, making road conditions difficult.
Public transport is also battling cold polar air: SBB reports several train cancellations due to ice on the rail systems. Early Thursday morning all connections on the routes between Zurich Oerlikon and Baden, Winterthur and Schaffhausen and between Konolfingen and Thun are canceled. Rail traffic is also severely restricted between Zurich HB and Rapperswil SG, and delays and cancellations are expected.
The next days are still frozen
According to Meteonews, it will remain cold for the next few days. Switzerland is on the southern flank of a high above Scandinavia on a Bisenstrom. As a result, cold polar air is drawn to very cold and dry. In the morning, double-digit subzero temperatures are possible locally on the plains for the next few days. A strong breeze is also blowing. The so-called “wind chill” effect ensures that temperatures feel significantly colder than they are effective. Only on Monday should temperatures rise above freezing again.
