The nationwide ban on the burqa, which Switzerland will vote on on March 7, is highly controversial. But: As many posters as those of this electoral campaign have never been destroyed, roars the “Egerkinger Committee”, which is behind the popular initiative.
In some regions, such as the Lucerne and Basel area, numerous posters were stolen at great cost, including construction equipment. Others have been stained or even completely unrecognizable. The damage is considerable. “We have never experienced anything like this,” complain the committee and SVP members of the National Council, Andreas Glarner (58, AG) and Andrea Geissbühler (44, BE).
“This unworthy hustle and bustle must come to an end!”
Glarner doesn’t want to accept that under any circumstances. Now the SVP politician, who likes to use the two-handed verbal sword, is even taking on vigilante justice! Through Twitter, he offers a proud reward of 2,000 Swiss francs for the arrest of the perpetrators. It is clear to him: “This unworthy bustle must come to an end!”
For the Pro-Committee, the systematic destruction of voting posters is nothing less than “a cowardly attack on the core of democracy.” These are no longer just childish jokes. Rather, Glarner and his colleagues see a great deal of criminal energy behind it.
“For every poster demolished, we put up an additional one”
But they don’t want to give in. On the contrary: “For every poster demolished, our billboards put up an additional one,” the committee announced. And: some perpetrators have already been identified with videos of evidence: “All of them are systematically subjected to criminal law.” Circles affiliated with the SVP do not want to let this “cowardly attack on our democratic system” take hold of them.
National Councilman Senior Vice President Glarner is not playing deputy sheriff for the first time. Last year he posted an unedited image on Facebook of young people who had posted a SVP poster. At that time he offered a reward of 1,000 francs. With success: Glarner has reported on lubricants.
