The renewed store closures approved by the Federal Council hit many small businesses hard. Those who do not sell articles of daily use cannot open their store until the end of February. For department stores, this means: A large part of the range must be locked. And it can no longer be sold. So far the starting point.
Now the measures are also affecting the big players in the industry. And they do not hesitate for long, they pull the cord and close. Coop is closing the first branches of the Coop City department store. “Because sales have plummeted,” a salesperson tells BLICK.
Wil and Volketswil closed
Coop spokeswoman Melanie Grüter confirms BLICK’s corresponding investigation. “The Coop City department store in Wil SG has been closed since early February and will reopen after closing,” she says. “Due to the current situation, we have fewer clients.” Probably also because Coop City doesn’t have a food department in Abbot City. The Coop City in Volketswil ZH in the Volkiland shopping center is also currently closed.
Basically, Coop tries to employ as many employees as possible for other tasks. “Due to the number of affected employees, this is unfortunately not possible for everyone, so some employees have to work short-time,” continued Grüter.
No further closings are currently planned. “The other 28 Coop City department stores are currently open.” But: “We are constantly monitoring the situation,” says Coop’s spokeswoman. Confidence sounds different in some way.
