There was no time to dress up. Many people queue in front of hospitals in Seattle (USA) in pajamas, reports the New York Times. They followed a spontaneous nighttime vaccination call in their region. Because Moderna’s Corona vaccine should be stored at minus 70 degrees. But at a local hospital the vaccination refrigerator failed.
If Moderna vaccine doses are not stored as cold, they lose their effectiveness. Therefore, on Thursday a total of 1,600 vaccinations had to be administered on very short notice. At 8.30pm, the faulty refrigerator was noticed at the Kaiser Permanente vaccination center.
Hospitals organized vaccination against rays
“We had twelve hours to deliver these 1,600 doses to people,” a hospital spokeswoman said the next day. Clinic staff notified two nearby larger hospitals and asked for support.
Within two hours, the clinics were ready for a spontaneous vaccination campaign. Health officials announced around 11 p.m. that Seattle residents would have a chance to get vaccinated, if they showed up right away.
Numerous residents responded to the lightning strike and long lines formed in front of the hospitals. At around 3:30 that night, all doses of vaccine were administered. (euc)
