Snow masses slowly accumulate on the railing of the Simplon Pass road. But the avalanche cannot be stopped. After a few seconds the road is buried. On Monday, shortly before 4 pm, an avalanche broke out over Ried-Brig in the canton of Valais and made its way into the valley.
A video from the reader impressively shows the moment when the avalanche reached and sank in the Simplon. It is not the first avalanche to bury the connection between Valais and Italy. The Simplonpass road was already closed Sunday night after an avalanche broke out. No vehicles were spilled or injured, as the Valais canton police wrote in a message.
But the Simplonstrasse will remain closed until at least Wednesday. Because more avalanches cannot be ruled out in the region. According to the Snow and Avalanche Research Institute, the risk is classified as significant. Car transport between Brig and Iselle has been reinforced especially for this. (hmh)
