Kitzbühel ensures a ski show every year. But everyone would like to do without photos like Friday. Two downhill riders suffered a severe crash on the Streif, the race ending prematurely later. This overshadows the historic victory of Beat Feuz.

When the doctors treated Urs Kryenbühl, who had seriously crashed, at the destination in Kitzbühel, Ryan Cochran-Siegle had already been transferred with the rescue helicopter. The notorious Streif also caused serious falls in 2021 and put aside the sporting result, including the triumph of Beat Feuz. Kryenbühl slammed his head into the track during the finish jump on Friday, American professional Cochran-Siegle even broke a safety net in his accident.

Typically, up to 50,000 fans look up the mountain with a mixture of thrill and excitement during the most spectacular downhill race of the Alpine Ski World Cup. Spectators are not allowed due to Corona 2021. The drama at the Streif, however, did not stop at this race, in which Feuz celebrated his long-awaited first victory in Kitzbühel. The descent was canceled after several mandatory breaks after 30 starts, but because of the wind and poor visibility, not because of accidents.

Above all, the fall of Kryenbühl surprised the audience and viewers. The 26-year-old from Schwyz lost his balance in the finish jump at almost 150 kilometers per hour and hit his head on the slope. The Confederate’s skis broke. The accident painfully recalled compatriot Daniel Albrecht’s fall in the same place in 2009, which resulted in a traumatic brain injury and three weeks in a coma; Albrecht never returned to his former strength.

Swiss Ski announced in the evening that, according to an initial examination, Kryenbühl had suffered a concussion, a fractured right clavicle and a torn cruciate and internal ligament in his right knee. He stays in the hospital overnight.

Feuz at the destination jump: “It doesn’t have to be”

“The jump is too far,” said winner Feuz, who was only able to enjoy his first success to a limited extent after four second places in the most important descent of the World Cup. He won ahead of Matthias Mayer from Austria and Dominik Paris from South Tyrol. “The jump has been a problem for three days. I sailed 60, 70 meters, “Feuz said on ORF, adding:” It doesn’t have to be this way. ”

The Bernese knows how to deactivate the jump: “You have only deactivated the first two or three meters, but you jump much further back. You can only deactivate it by filling the gap beforehand. “

Germany’s Josef Ferstl also struggled with the controversial spot and was only able to stand up with difficulty after jumping too far. “I noticed it in the air: it’s an honor, it goes far!” Ferstl said. “I knew I had to stay compact, keep the tension, otherwise it rings.”

“I was on the edge,” admitted Emmanuel Couder of the FIS World Federation. Even the accident of the podium candidate Cochran-Siegle was extreme. Shortly before the end of the infamous crossing, the American pro lost control of his skis and crashed into a safety net at full speed. As a result of the massive impact, Cochran-Siegle pushed him face down with his back and neck to the limit, broke the net and was left behind.

Jury radio announced that the 28-year-old had pain in his shoulder. The American team announced a few hours later: Cochran-Siegle suffered a minor cervical vertebra fracture, but is now back at the team hotel.

The second part of the Kitzbühel police thriller continues today, Saturday: at the same time, in the same location: follow the race from 11:30 on the “Blue News” live indicator.
