- Almost 170,000 people in Switzerland have already been vaccinated against Covid-19, with suspected adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in 42 cases.
- 26 reports were not serious and, according to Swissmedic, correspond to the known risk profile.
- Sixteen reactions were serious and five were fatal after vaccination.
The affected patients in these five fatal cases were between 84 and 92 years old, as announced by Swissmedic in a press release. The anti-drug authority writes that, according to the current state of knowledge, the deceased died of diseases that occur more frequently at this time.
Despite a temporal association with vaccination, there is no specific suspicion that the vaccine was the cause of death.
According to Swissmedic, all reports of suspected ADRs are closely monitored by medical experts in cooperation with regional pharmacovigilance centers.
Risk-benefit does not change
The Medicines Agency points out that according to the vaccination strategy, currently it is mainly people at risk who are vaccinated, that is, people over 75 years of age and with chronic diseases. Therefore, for purely statistical reasons, a certain number of deaths temporarily related to Covid 19 vaccination can be expected.
Therefore, the Medicines Agency believes that the notifications of adverse effects that have been received and analyzed so far do not modify the positive benefit-risk profile of Covid-19 vaccines.
