America, nation, democracy – these terms appeared frequently in Biden’s speech. But not the name of its predecessor.
The words “America” and “American” dominated Joe Biden’s speech. This is not surprising for a US president’s inaugural address and it was to be expected. With Donald Trump’s inaugural address, which was much shorter, it was no different in 2017, just that he used to say “America first.” But there were other expressions that dictated the content of Biden’s twenty-minute speech: “Democracy,” for example, or repeatedly “defiance.”
However, above all, the speech was characterized by words intended to express unity: “Unity”, “Nation”, “Together” or “United”. It was a speech based on the huge crises facing the new president: He talked about how American democracy was attacked two weeks ago, when the Capitol was attacked, exactly where Biden delivered his speech. of how it is now important to control the pandemic, fight racism, stop climate change.
Unity as the central motif
Each of these crises poses a great challenge. Especially since now it is important to solve them all at the same time, the “Unity” is fundamental. He implored the people to come closer as they did before, to speak to each other. “We are good people,” he said at one point: We are good people. All this is reflected in words like “heart”, “good” or “soul”.
It was to be hoped that “unity” would become the central motive: After four years under Donald Trump, the United States is deeply divided. The political camps are also irreconcilable. When Biden asks people to rediscover common ground, he is referring to a past that he himself helped shape: He was a senator himself for 36 years and has seen political opponents make concessions.
It is questionable whether it can now fill the deep trenches. 74 million Americans voted for their opponent Donald Trump. Some believe that the result of the US presidential election was massively falsified, although there is no evidence to support it. These Trump supporters will not disappear overnight. It’s quite possible that Biden’s desire for unity remains exactly that: a godly desire.
By the way, Biden only briefly discussed foreign policy (“world”) – he promised to repair old and damaged alliances. And one word was completely missing: “Trump.”
