Contrary to expectations, American Democrats apparently also win a majority in the Senate. This is of enormous importance to the future presidency of Joe Biden. But Democratic power still has its limits, and this is not a bad sign for the United States.
Miracles rarely happen in politics, especially when they are duplicated. But in Georgia’s runoff elections for two Senate seats, Democrats appear to have been resoundingly successful. The outcome has yet to be officially determined, but the two Democratic candidates are clearly ahead. If this is confirmed, the result will be an earthquake for American politics. For the first time in nearly two decades, Democrats will reappoint both senators in a “deep southern” state; everywhere in this conservative part of the country, Republicans have a near-political monopoly. The surprising Democratic success shows that Joe Biden’s meager victory in the presidential election in this state was not a coincidence, but rather that the forces in Georgia have changed markedly.
