Gerry Marsden wrote the history of music with the hymn “You will never walk alone.” Now he has died at the age of 78.
Many football fans may not even know the name of the British singer of the group “Gerry And The Pacemakers”, even though they have sung his most famous song several times. The band became world famous with their version of “I’ll Never Walk Alone”.
“You will never walk alone” (YNWA) is not only the anthem of Liverpool FC, but has also achieved cult status in many other stadiums.
Like the Beatles, the band came from Liverpool and shared their manager Brian Epstein and producer George Martin. Although they did not reach the world fame of the Beatles, they were great in Liverpool. Liverpool FC paid tribute to Gerry Marsden on Twitter.
From the cover to the hymn
The original of “You will never walk alone” comes from the 1945 musical “Carousel”. Marsden first heard the song in the cinema when the musical was filmed. I thought what a nice song. I tell my band that we will play this song, ”Marsden recalled in a 2018 interview.
The band released their cover version in 1963 and the song immediately became a # 1 hit on the UK singles charts. It was a tradition that the top 10 current hits were played before the start, including “You Will Never Walk Alone” by Gerry And The Pacemakers for a while.
When YNWA flew out of the top 10 and was no longer played, fans are said to have complained. Then the song became the anthem of the club. Marsden said in an interview: “I still get goose bumps at every game when the song comes out.”
As his family now announces, Gerry Marsden died after a brief illness at the age of 78. His song will survive forever as a football anthem.
