A Zürich FDP politician caused a shit storm with a tweet. The text reads: “The world has too many overweight people, too many sick people, too many people with weak immune systems, too many very old people. Corona clears that up now. Is it really that bad and do we have to feed them all ‘healthy’ and keep them alive? “
The Twitter community reacted violently: The statement was “inhumane” as many write. “Above all, you should definitely no longer treat people like him with health,” writes one user. It reminds others of the way people were treated in WWII. “That’s really the last drawer,” as one user commented in the statement.
Party leadership has consequences
As reported by “20 Minuten”, the politician apologized “in all its forms” for his statement. The tweet was posted on Saturday and has now been deleted. According to the newspaper, the FDP politician was already very active on Twitter in the past and has often been critical of Corona’s measures. He feels he has been misunderstood, he says: he worries that too many people will be harmed by the crown measures. Everyone should be “suckled”, but not all branches of industry should be reduced to rubble and ashes.
Now the politician wants to take a break from Twitter. “After nine months of the pandemic, we have all become a bit fragile and aggressive,” he writes. He hoped the “hunt against him” would stop now.
Zurich FDP President Severin Pflüger comments on the tweet as an “unacceptable statement”. “The tweet violates the fundamental values of the party. Humanity and brotherhood are fundamental values for us, ”he says. Within the party there is now a process against the author: “The declaration will have drastic consequences for him,” announced Pflüger.
