Switzerland received 126,000 new doses of vaccines. Thanks to the imminent approval of more vaccines, more will come soon.
Today the army received 126,000 new doses of vaccination. But they should follow more, thanks to the new approvals. This is how Nora Kronig, Deputy Director of BAG, explains it. “We now look to the future, of course, in the direction of approval, which we expect for Moderna soon.” This, along with the vaccine already approved by Pfizer / Biontech, would soon make more doses available. “We estimate that we will have about half a million cans in January and a little over a million in February.” The plan is to continue working at this level until the summer.
Vaccinate everyone who is willing to vaccinate before summer
Faster deliveries are urgently needed, because the BAG wants to achieve an ambitious goal for the summer: everyone who wants to be vaccinated must have the opportunity to be vaccinated. Kronig is confident: “We have planned from the beginning that we can vaccinate in the first semester, that by the summer we will be able to vaccinate everyone who wants to be vaccinated, and we are on the right track and we are confident that we will succeed. “
Criticisms of the vaccination strategy
Until now, not everyone has shared this trust. In several cantons, politicians and health experts complained about the lack of vaccination doses and the slowness. Away from everyone who wants to get vaccinated at this time. Zürich government adviser Nathalie Rickli said this morning on the occasion of the start of vaccination in her canton: “Unfortunately, there are only a few doses of vaccine available. As of today we had 16,000. Since one in two people has to be vaccinated twice, there are only 8,000 people. Appointments were taken immediately in January. We still have general practitioners informing us about high-risk patients. “
Slow in international comparison
Even in an international comparison, Switzerland does not belong to the absolute top when it comes to vaccination. While there are only just over 200,000 doses of vaccines available in Switzerland, other countries are moving at a much faster rate. Israel, for example, has already vaccinated more than a million people. Has Switzerland ordered too few doses of vaccine? The STOCK EXCHANGE says no. “We have ordered the appropriate volume,” says Deputy Director Kronig. But as it shows now: just not with the fastest manufacturer. Because at three million doses, the Pfizer / Biontech vaccine is the smallest item. Switzerland has ordered around 4.5 million cans from Moderna and up to 5.3 million cans from AstraZeneca. The only hope for the BAG, the cantons and Switzerland is that the other vaccines will be approved as soon as possible.
