Suspected robbery: Bürglen parish dismisses religious teachers without notice
Police investigations are under way against a religion teacher from the parish of Bürglen. It is said that he stole money while giving pastoral care to a private person; the presumption of innocence applies.
The police have launched an investigation against a religious educator from the parish of St. Peter and Paul in Bürglen. The church council announced this on Monday: “The parish of St. Peter and St. Paul in Bürglen is currently facing an incident that has led the church council to immediately terminate cooperation with an employee.” The presumption of innocence is applied in police proceedings.
The man apparently relapsed
Pastor Wendelin Bucheli informed the parish about the incident on Sunday as part of the service. The religious educator is said to have stolen several thousand francs from one person. After the alleged robbery, the religion teacher was admitted to a clinic. Apparently the man had relapsed. It is said that two years ago he withdrew money from the parish fund to finance his drug addiction. “Knowing of his addiction, the church council contacted the doctors and therapists to take steps that would optimally support him in his healing process.” However, the measures could not have worked because the man was not oriented with the truth.
He cannot now be allowed to have committed a crime in the “sensitive area” of pastoral care. Protecting personal privacy is important to both the church council and Pastor Bucheli. “But it’s also my job to protect the community,” says Bucheli. Even if the investigations are not yet complete, the church council is clear: “The trust that is indispensable for pastoral work is so bad that further cooperation with the employee is no longer possible.” The communication goes on to say: “The Council of Churches very much regrets this development. He wishes the laid off worker all the best and God’s help. ”The man is still in clinical treatment.
No replacement until the end of the school year
The Bürglen parish is now facing a personnel problem. “For the time being, we will distribute employee tasks internally within the team,” says Wendelin Bucheli. “We will not receive a replacement from the Dean’s Office until the end of the school year.” A catechist has increased her workload. “We expect a sustainable solution in the fall.”
