After another rush over the weekend, numerous winter sports centers in Germany took more measures to avoid large crowds of people on the slopes and hills.
Parking spaces have been blocked with construction fences, entry bans on ski slopes and toboggan runs have been prepared, and roadblocks have been considered. Some places want to shut down heavily. In the low mountains it must remain winter during the week.
Ski lifts and slopes closed
Warnings from authorities and police had hardly had any effect in recent days: despite the lockdown and crown rules, crowds were drawn to excursion destinations in Germany’s snow-capped mountainous regions. The ski lifts and slopes, as well as the restaurants and cabins are closed. Time and again there were reports of violations of Corona’s measures, such as mask requirements and contact restrictions.
The municipality of Hellenthal in the Eifel, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, on Monday blocked access to parking spaces at the excursion destinations with construction fences. Administration employees are on site to enforce the bans, a city spokesman said. In Winterberg, also in North Rhine-Westphalia, he initially remained silent on Monday, as a city spokeswoman said. Major access roads were closed Sunday.
Crowded parking spaces
According to the police, the situation calmed down in the wintry Harz in Saxony-Anhalt earlier in the week. In contrast, the parking spaces in Upper Harz in Lower Saxony were full again.
The mayor of Thuringia’s winter sports resort Oberhof, Thomas Schulz, announced that he would heavily cordon off the city shortly before the start of the biathlon World Cup at the end of the week. “Only people who live or work here or have a legitimate interest in coming here should have access,” he said when asked.
