Schalke have been waiting for a Bundesliga win for almost a year. Will the change of course with Christian Gross be successful?
After the extremely short winter break, all eyes will be on Schalke on Saturday in the Bundesliga. The Gelsenkircheners have been in the league without a win for 29 games; only two are missing from Tasmania Berlin’s negative record.
Especially when you haven’t won a championship for almost a year, you hold on to little things. Schalke 04’s rear-pilot hopefuls are a effectively resigned coach who hasn’t worked in the Bundesliga for 10 years, and a new left-back who hasn’t played a league game since September.
Something like euphoria
But new coach Christian Gross, who will make his return to the Bundesliga at Hertha at 6:30 pm on Saturday after 3744 days, and the yet-ineligible returnee Sead Kolasinac bring some hope.
Gross should bring the experience and poise that his significantly younger predecessors David Wagner and Manuel Baum lacked in the hectic and tense environment at Schalke. Of course, it is a “special mission”. But if the team does all it can, the 66-year-old Zurich looks ahead to be “firmly convinced” of relegation.
Kolasinac, on loan from Arsenal for half a year, is also supposed to help with the mission of staying awake. The return of the former junior even caused euphoria in some places. And you can really wear them at Schalke. Kolasinac is not yet eligible to play in Berlin.
