A 28-year-old resident had heated oil in a frying pan in the morning, as the Aargau canton police announced on Saturday. The oil caught fire and the neighbor tried to put out the fire with water. Flames could have entered the steam vent. Over the course of the day, they started smoldering fires on the middle floors.
The fire department broke several intermediate fires and walls of the house and cooled them to prevent the burning fires from spreading further. In addition to the Wohlen Fire Department, patrols from the Wohlen Regional Police and the Cantonal Police were also on duty.
Never pour water on burning oil
When oil burns, the fire should never come into contact with water: because fat and water don’t mix, the water suddenly evaporates when poured over the burning oil. The water vapor that is created carries away small drops of fat. These droplets ignite, generating a large jet of flame.
Therefore, oil fires cannot be extinguished with water. The ways to extinguish burning oil in the kitchen are as follows:
- With the lid of the saucepan you can remove the oxygen from the heat. Then the stove should be turned off and the pan carefully removed. You must wait a few minutes before lifting the lid again.
- Even with a fire blanket, fire can be quickly nipped in the bud. But only use specialty fire blankets from specialty retailers and never a regular household blanket – the fire could spread further because it could spread to the blanket.
- A special extinguishing spray is also suitable for suddenly extinguishing grease fires. A product from a specialized retailer should also be used here and the manufacturer’s instructions should be followed.
