Defending Tour champion Dawid Kubacki is regaining his position by winning the New Year’s competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The Polo celebrates a superior victory with 139 and 144 m.

Hardly anyone expected that. At Oberstdorf, after finishing 15th as the underdog, Kubacki turned the corner in the traditional event earlier in the year. The Pole won so well that he is back in the race in battle to successfully defend his title. Even Norway’s World Cup leader Halvor Egner Granerud, who also sets himself apart from the rest of the competition, didn’t stand a chance this time. It was the day of the Poles. Due to a faulty test for the corona virus, the entire team was almost excluded from the tour. Now they came up with the winner and, with Piotr Zyla and Kamil Stoch, they also took third and fourth place.

In the fight for the golden eagle, the trophy for victory in the Four Hills Tournament, a four-way battle is emerging. Kubacki advanced to fourth place. The world champion on the normal hill in Seefeld 2019 is only 5 meters from the new leader Granerud. German Karl Geiger and Stoch are between the two. Going alone at the top like Ryoyu Kobayashi 2018/19 or Stoch a year earlier is nowhere in sight, even if Granerud is a huge favorite thanks to his consistency. The 24-year-old has won five of the nine World Cup competitions to date and it has never been worse than the fourth.

Unlike Granerud, another Norwegian co-favorite had already withdrawn from the race on New Year’s Eve: Marius Lindvik, who came third behind Geiger in Oberstdorf, was unable to compete at Garmisch-Partenkirchen due to severe toothache. . He also fails in Innsbruck after a jaw operation.

Deschwanden scores again

Gregor Deschwanden also flew to the points in the ninth competition of the season, and this with confidence. The Lucerne man made it through easily to the final, although he lost the knockout match against Antti Aalto of Finland. At 128 m and the 22nd intermediate row, he continued 129.5 m. This brought him to 19th place, also at Aalto’s expense.

Dominik Peter retired with a jump to 120 m. Simon Ammann, who failed qualifying on New Year’s Eve, was only used as a pre-finisher. Also, he had to hand over the ten-year hill record to Kubacki. At this distance, the Pole even made a telemark landing – it was a fabulous jump.

The third competition is scheduled for Sunday in Innsbruck.
