The government is concerned about the many new infections and the two new virus variants. But the established criteria for the fit are not met. The Federal Council will address the situation again on January 6, 2021.

In a final assessment of the situation shortly before the turn of the year, the Federal Council reached a regrettable conclusion. The state government wrote in a statement Wednesday that the epidemiological situation remains worrisome. The high level of infection and the two variants of the mutated virus that have already been detected in Switzerland are cause for concern. The mutations from Great Britain and South Africa have already been found in seven people in Switzerland. And according to current scientific knowledge, new variants of the coronavirus are significantly more contagious than the previously known form. But at least they shouldn’t cause more serious illnesses. There is also no evidence that the vaccines developed so far against Covid-19 do not work.
