Children who are infected with the coronavirus generally have no or only mild symptoms. However, an inflammatory reaction can occur several weeks after infection. Swiss children’s hospitals have treated several cases in recent weeks.
In pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome (Pims) there is an overreaction of the immune system with high fever for days, as the Children’s Hospital of the University of Zurich wrote on Wednesday. In addition to fever, patients often suffer from abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and skin rashes. The disease was first diagnosed in Switzerland in May, after the first wave of pandemics.
Treated more than 60 children
In the second wave of coronavirus, intensive care units for children noticed an increase in Pims cases. To date, more than 60 children have been treated for the disease, most of them in recent weeks. In general, the disease is rare, it said in the message.
If young patients received anti-inflammatory treatment early on, they generally recovered quickly and completely. Professionals have now established guidelines for all children affected by Pims to receive the same treatment and one that is based on the latest knowledge.
According to the notification, children suspected of having pims should be taken to a pediatrician or an emergency room. Protective measures for children continue to apply due to the coronavirus. (SDA / vof)
