The Basel Carnival will not take place in 2021 due to the crown, but there is still a carnival plaque: “ainewäg” is its motto. The plaque is designed like a toilet paper roll and is a reminder of Hämster’s toilet paper purchases at the start of the pandemic.
The plate was designed by the Basel graphic artist Pascal Kottmann. The Fasnachts-Committee called its work in a statement Wednesday “extremely successful.” Kottmann returned to the main theme of the year without viruses and other negative symbols.
The basic motif of the plate is a roll of toilet paper with three sheets, each of which represents one of the “three Scheenschte Dääg”. The leaves represent an elderly whistling aunt, a clown as a drummer and trumpeter, and a “Schnitzelbanggler”. This refers to the centenary of the Schnitzelbangg Committee.
Happy in spite of everything
Last but not least, the thick roll of toilet paper symbolizes the long and uncertain duration of the pandemic, notes the Carnival Committee. With the plaque, which is joyous despite all adversities, hope is also related to the carnival “ainewäg” having a good time in some way during the three days.
The Carnival Committee is convinced that the spirit of the Basel Carnival lives on despite Corona. Unless an extraordinarily high number of designs were received for the 2021 badge. Pascal Kottmann, who won the badge competition, had already been successful in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2014.
Due to the pandemic, significantly fewer copies of the 2021 Carnival badge will be made than in previous years. As usual, proceeds go to registered units. They are called to support those who make costumes, make larvae or paint lanterns.
As a badge of solidarity, the 2021 carnival plaque should help ensure that those who live off the carnival tradition can survive, the committee notes. The badge goes on sale January 2. Five variants are offered. Like the previous year, they cost between 9 and 100 francs.
The Basel Carnival should have lasted from February 22 to 24, 2021. This year’s edition could not be held due to the crown crisis. The hopes of the carnivals now rest in the year 2022. Then, the Basel Carnival, which UNESCO 2017 declared as intangible cultural heritage of humanity, will take place from March 7 to 9.
