Like the year before, Urs Kryenbühl took the podium on the Bormio descent. Austria celebrates a double victory.

When Urs Kryenbühl in starting No. 10 took the lead with a tenth advantage over his teammate Mauro Caviezel, it briefly seemed like the second Swiss success in the Stelvio’s descent. But Austrians Matthias Mayer and Vincent Kriechmayr took 6 and 2 hundredths respectively from Schwyz, who had a sensational podium a year ago, and prevented the premiere of Kryenbühl’s World Cup victory.
Mayer celebrated his tenth World Cup victory, the fifth in relegation. The winner of the last 4 downhill races at Bormio, Dominik Paris, showed the best performance of the season so far after his cruciate ligament tear and pushed Caviezel to fifth place.

Surpassing Feuz’s 29-spot streak in the top 10 was nearly broken. Unlike the Super-G, the Schangnauer improved when they lost the points, but the 33-year-old was unable to compete for the top positions in 10th place.
There were moments of shock when Carlo Janka, Niels Hintermann and Ralph Weber drove. Janka and Weber lost control in the same jump and fell, but were able to cross the finish line without help. Hintermann narrowly avoided a knockdown at the same point, but then missed a goal.
As always difficult route
The “Pista Stelvio” once again lived up to its reputation as a demanding and spectacular route this year. The drivers were challenged from top to bottom and, especially in the last stage, were subjected to extreme physical conditions.

With this descent the year 2020 of the ski circus ends. The next race for the men is a slalom in Zagreb on January 6. The women will continue on January 3, also with a slalom in Zagreb.
