The first corona vaccine has already been approved. But it will be some time before a large part of the population is vaccinated. British researchers are now testing an alternative to vaccination.
Antibodies should be the solution. These support the body in fighting pathogens. Currently, two British studies are examining whether artificial antibodies are also helpful.
Can Antibodies Replace Vaccination?
One study injects antibodies into people who have recently had close contact with an infected person. “The syringe could offer immediate protection if it is too late for vaccination,” the study director said in a statement from University College London.
Another study wants to find out if antibodies can replace a vaccine. Some test subjects are injected with antibodies. Others just get a placebo. The researchers want to investigate whether those with antibodies have an easier course of corona disease.
The effect lasts less
Researchers expect the therapy to be approved in the UK in March or April. It should be a complement to the vaccine, as the effect lasts less. Antibodies are not always effective in the body, as the “Spiegel” writes. In return, the protective effect takes effect immediately and can therefore be useful for an infected person, not vaccinated, for example. (lui)
