With her victory in the slalom, Michelle Gisin wrote not only the history of Swiss skiing, but also a very personal fairy tale.
“The Magic Mountain Fairy Tale,” wrote Michelle Gisin. 19 years after the last slalom triumph, a Swiss woman from Engelberg is back on the top of the podium. The fact that Gisin can celebrate his first World Cup victory in Semmering, of all places, is something magical.
Exactly 8 years ago, on December 29, 2012, he made his World Cup debut in the Austrian spa town, and indicated his potential. With the 44th start, he easily qualified for race two on his debut, but then dropped out there.
“It’s incredible that I got my first win here. And then also in the slalom ”, said the off-roader, who had her first places on the podium in the World Cup in the truck and the speed disciplines.
The end of the Shiffrin-Vlhova series
With his coup in Austria, Gisin not only ended a long streak of drought in Switzerland. For the first time since January 2017, Mikaela Shiffrin or Petra Vlhova were not at the top at the end of a slalom. In the last 28 slalom of the World Cup, the victory went to the American or the Slovak.
I said, ‘I’ve been trying for so long and it seems so easy on you.’
In the last two years, from the Swiss point of view, it was mainly Wendy Holdener who shook the chair of the two dominators. The Schwyzerin has already been on the slalom podium 24 times. A single victory has not worked so far.
This fact did not diminish Holdener’s joy for his teammate, quite the contrary. “I told him, ‘I’ve been trying for so long and it seems so easy with you,’” said Schwyzerin, who emphasized Gisin’s “rough ride”.
With ranks 4 and 2 at Levi, Gisin had already indicated his strong slalom form this winter. The fact that the moment of great success came in the third race of the season also left the combined Olympic champion from Pyeongchang speechless. At the same time, he highlighted the performance of the entire team, especially Holdener.
“Today is me, but Wendy has what it takes to be on top soon,” says Gisin. And the Engelberg-born woman didn’t forget her currently injured teammates at the time of the big win. “The fight is worth it, everything can come at once.”
