The starting signal for vaccines in Switzerland was given on December 23. Then Lucerne was the first canton to start vaccinations. Currently, vaccination is being carried out with mobile teams in nursing homes, the vaccination center at the Lucerne Exhibition Center will be operational in March or April.
Today the cantons of Basel-Stadt, Geneva and Valais begin to vaccinate. Most of the rest of the cantons will start on January 4. More about this here.
This is how vaccination is carried out in Lucerne
Crown mutations discovered in Switzerland
As soon as an aggressive British crown mutation was discovered in south-east England, an even more contagious mutation was reported from South Africa on December 23. As reported by the Federal Office of Public Health on its website, so far three cases are known in which the British variant was detected. The South African variant was detected yesterday for the first time in two samples.
All persons who have entered Switzerland from Great Britain or South Africa by air or by land since December 14, 2020 must be quarantined for 10 days.writes the Federal Office of Public Health.

British ski tourists escape quarantine
The new measures were not well received by British tourists who traveled to Switzerland for their ski holidays. While some have accepted it, others have secretly fled their quarantine. According to the “SonntagsZeitung”, 200 people have disappeared from their hotels in Verbier. Finding them again is a difficult task. It is not known where the refugees are; there were no flights to Great Britain at the beginning of the week.
Some Swiss ski areas remain open
Despite quarantine measures for the British population and crown restrictions, the ski areas in Valais were heavily visited yesterday. The Lenzerheide / Arosa and Adelboden-Lenk snow sports areas registered fewer winter sports enthusiasts than expected. They were only half full.
In addition to Valais, the cantons of Graubünden, Bern, Waadt and Ticino kept their ski areas open during the festive period. By contrast, the mountain railways in central and eastern Switzerland stopped operating due to the corona pandemic.
You can find an overview of the open ski areas in Switzerland here.
People also ski in Austria, and how
While skiing has been severely restricted in many EU countries, Austria has resisted closing its ski areas. Only Ischgl should remain closed because Ischgl on the Austrian side and Samnaun on the Swiss side go together.
The race in the other ski areas in Austria was so big that some facilities were closed for the weekend. While Austria is in the third lockdown, an exception applies to skiing, for which Chancellor Kurz is now being criticized.
