The Federal Council announced comparatively mild measures for Switzerland on December 18. Unlike neighboring countries, there is currently no blockade here. However, since December 22, restaurants, cultural, leisure and sports facilities have been closed throughout Switzerland. Ski areas can remain open, provided they receive a cantonal permit.
“The measures are tough,” Health Minister Alain Berset said at the press conference. However, many called for tougher measures in advance: for example, the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG), the federal task force and employees of the health sector. With England’s mutated corona virus, the situation becomes even more precarious: the virus is now more contagious and has already been detected in Switzerland.
Task Force: greater urgency
The federal task force emphasizes: the urgency for tougher measures is now even greater. Call on the Federal Council to act. Is the state government reacting to these demands now? At the last Federal Council press conference, politicians announced that they would repeatedly review the situation and, if necessary, impose new measures in the new year. At that time, nothing was known about a mutation.
And: Health Minister Berset has two emergency plans in the drawer. He coordinated this with the cantons before the Federal Council Christmas holidays. They should be used if the situation of the crown in Switzerland does not improve or worsens. Dec. 28 was planned as the deadline for an inventory and a possible start of emergency plans. With them, the Federal Council should be able to quickly have new measures available should they become necessary.
With the new measures of December 18, a first package prepared by Alain Berset has already been implemented.
Another package would include all of these measures in addition to the following:
- Shops and markets close on weekends and have to reduce their capacity again.
- Employees have the right to work from home or have strong protection at work.
The additional package would mean a lock. The measurements from the above package would also be included here:
- Stores and markets will be closed, except for stores that sell everyday items.
- A maximum of ten people from two households are allowed to gather for private events.
- A maximum of ten people is allowed to meet in public spaces.
It remains to be seen whether the Federal Council will use these plans and take further action in the previous year. Federal Councilor Alain Berset should at least comment on the current situation in Corona on Monday: At 10:45 am, he will hold a press conference in Basel with Health Director Lukas Engelberg to open the vaccination center.
