Unforgettable
Chomutow and Bykow let HCD dream of title in Spengler Cup comeback
December 26, 1993 – HC Davos returns to the Spengler Cup for the first time in four years and creates a great sensation from the start. Despite the 3: 6 deficit, the hosts won 8: 7 thanks to seven goals from the Bykow / Chomutow duo against Traktor Tscheljabinsk.
HC Davos can finally participate in the Spengler Cup again. HCD had to concede three times in a row due to relegation in the First Division. Only thanks to the return to the NLA in the spring of 1993, the organizer of the tournament returned as Davos Selection in the 67th edition.
To remain competitive against the best international teams, HCD receives a foreign reinforcement block. In addition to Per Djoos (Lugano), Mike Posma (Thurgau), Andrei Kwartalnow and Albert Malgin (both from Chur), Andrei Chomutov and Wjatscheslaw Bykow from Friborg-Gottéron will be honored again.
In the opening match, the two friendly Russians with HCD will meet their compatriots from Trakor Chelyabinsk on St. Stephen’s Day. The fourth of the Russian “International Hockey League” is the big favorite and announces the rate from the beginning at the Davos ice rink, which was sold out with 8100 spectators.
15 Russian goals in the 8: 7 goal show
After just 24 seconds, the puck twists in the area of HCD goalkeeper Nando Wieser for the first time. The Davosers are 1: 4 after the first third and 2: 5 after 25 minutes. When the Russians also counter HCD’s next goal shortly before the end of the second period with 6: 3, the decision seems to have finally been made.

HCD coach Mats Waltin is not giving up: “After 30 minutes, the Russians have more and more problems. He’s only been in Davos for three days. The height is noticeable there. After 40 minutes, I was convinced that we would still win this match. “
And the people of Davos create the miracle! Waltin changed from four to three lines at the beginning of the last third. Bykow and Chomutow tie at 6: 6 in ten minutes. Then it’s Malgin’s turn to score 7: 7 before Chomutow scores the winning goal 53 seconds before the end to make the 8: 7 on Bykow’s miraculous pass.

15 goals in a match, all scored by Russians. The Chomutow (4 doors / 1 assist) and Bykow (3 doors / 2 assist) locomotives pull down to the ground without assistance. Waltin rejoices: “I set you completely free. You can play however you want. And they showed us all: We want to win here. It’s amazing how they took us, ”said the HCD coach.
The HCD triumph was also a success for Swiss television. In the final phase, which can hardly be beat in terms of excitement, 317,000 viewers watch television. This corresponds to a market share of 34.9 percent.
The coronation was lost
After spectacular goals from Chomutov and Bykow, Swiss hockey fans are already dreaming of the first Davos Spengler Cup title since 1958. Especially when HCD – led by the friendly Bykow / Chomoutow duo – thanks to victories against Färjestad BK and team Canada reaches the final.
There the Davosers meet again with Färjestad, but sadly the fairy tale does not have a happy ending. The physically scarred Bündner missed the liveliness of the final, but held up well until ten minutes before the end. Thanks to two goals from Chomutow, the score is 3: 3, then the Swedes add the decisive points and finally deservedly win 6: 3.

The people of Davos are clearly disappointed, but of course no one wants to admit it. “No one would have expected second place from us,” says the HCD Jacques Soguel Center. “That is why I am not disappointed.”
But there is a small consolation: Top scorer Chomutov and “Zar” Bykow are chosen for the All-Star-Team and the two promise to be part of the game again next year. The two Russians keep their word and take Davos to the final in 1994. There they are about getting revenge on Färjestad. But again the Swedes are too strong. You win 3-0. For Bykow / Chomutow it is the last appearance in Landwassertal. You will never win the Spengler Cup, like the Swiss championship title.
