Several shots were fired in Berlin-Kreuzberg on Saturday morning. Four men were injured. Nothing is known about the background yet.
It was still pitch dark when shots rang out in Berlin-Kreuzberg early on Boxing Day. Four men were seriously injured, as the Berlin police and the prosecutor announced on Saturday. According to the current state of knowledge, residents alerted the police, who heard the gunshots on Stresemannstrasse, in the immediate vicinity of the SPD party headquarters, shortly before four in the afternoon.
Emergency services found three injured at the alleged crime scene. A fourth injured man jumped into the nearby Landwehr Canal, from where rescuers pulled him out. The prosecution assumes a crime in the context of organized crime.
Around the Möckernbrücke metro station, which is directly on the Landwehr canal, the police searched the brush on the shore with flashlights. The injured, twice 30, 39 and 42 years old each, came according to the information to receive treatment in hospitals, where they were hospitalized. The first homicide commission has started the further investigation.
Prosecutor examines arrest warrants
The Berlin Public Prosecutor’s Office announced on Twitter: “Due to the shooting in the middle of organized crime, we are investigating several suspects in attempted murder together with a murder commission of the Berlin police and we are examining requests for arrest warrants.” A spokesman for the Prosecutor’s Office said that they were people who belonged to the group of four injured. How many there were, he did not say.
Several dozen police officers, some of them heavily armed, were on duty at the scene before dawn. A helicopter also flew over the capital in search of people involved. At first there were no arrests.
The crime scene is apparently at a front door on Stresemannstrasse, as reported on the spot by a photographer for the German press agency. Police cordoned off the area extensively, mostly to obtain evidence. According to a police spokesman, there were also police technicians at the scene.
At Stresemannstrasse 23, opposite the SPD party headquarters, a bullet hole could be seen in a door, as reported by the dpa photographer, not far from another bullet hole in a glass door. The sidewalk in front of the alleged crime scene was cordoned off.
Background not yet known
“The background is not yet known,” a police spokesman said in the morning. “We also don’t know yet how many people participated.” It is also not known yet whether several people fired shots or there was an exchange of gunfire. “The investigation is ongoing”.
In Berlin there are always disputes between individual groups or families. More recently, after a 29-year-old was shot in Kreuzberg, there was an attack by about 10 men on a ground-floor apartment and a car.
In February, a shooting at Berlin’s Tempodrom on Möckernstrasse, not far from the current crime scene, caused a sensation with one dead and four injured. The police were on duty with a large contingent, including homicide. An arrest warrant for involuntary manslaughter was issued against a 48-year-old man who reportedly shot a 42-year-old man and was seriously injured in the confrontation.
