Six-time English champion AFC Sunderland has a new owner. And he is young, rich and comes from Switzerland. The new owner is Kyril Louis-Dreyfus. It had been known for a long time that he was interested in buying the club. But now it really hit. The club and Louis-Dreyfus announced it.

The 22-year-old billionaire has big plans for Sunderland. He wants to lead the traditional English club in EFL League One, England’s third highest division, back on the road to success.

In a press release, the Zurich man announced: “I can’t wait to get started soon and I think we can bring Sunderland AFC back to the top of English football.” And: “I want to create a team that plays entertaining. The fans should love the team again. In the midst of a pandemic, I am aware of the difficult situation at the club. But I am firmly convinced that I can return Sunderland to the top flight of English football. I can not wait more.”

The Louis-Dreyfus family is well known

Can do it? The future will tell. The fact is, Louis-Dreyfus is a huge soccer fan. Which is not surprising. After all, the Louis-Dreyfus family is not unknown in the soccer business. Father Robert was CEO of Adidas for many years and since 1996 the largest shareholder of Club Olympique de Marseille. The French reached the final of the UEFA Cup twice. A year after his death, the club celebrated the championship title, but in 2016 mother Margarita sold the shares. Father Robert was also a shareholder of the Belgian club Standard Liège; the club’s training center is named after him.

And now Kyril Louis-Dreyfus. The 22-year-old seized the opportunity that current Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has been trying to sell the club for twelve months and only wants to keep part of his shares. A goal that he has now achieved. Louis-Dreyfus does not acquire all the shares, only the majority.

Still, the deal throws enough money into Sunderland’s coffers. As reported by “Sunderland Echo”, the acquisition by the young billionaire with an estimated fortune of more than two billion dollars should place AFC Sunderland in the 13th position of the ranking of the richest clubs in English football. At least at this point, the zurich have already achieved their goal. At least in terms of money, Sunderland AFC is again first class.
