Büchel held a midnight mass on Thursday at St. Gallen Cathedral. About two dozen believers gathered at the scene. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, only a maximum of fifty people per service were allowed and hygiene measures were taken. “We are not supposed to sing ourselves, but we can sing in our hearts what the singers tell us,” said the clergyman of the diocese of St. Gallen.
“We know that many are connected to us,” the bishop said at the Christmas Mass, which was broadcast on the Internet. He called for commemoration of people who suffered especially from loneliness and whose family celebrations had been thwarted. “God needs us as messengers of hope, love and trust.”
Dozens of churches throughout Switzerland are broadcasting their holiday Masses this year on the Internet, via local radio or regional television. The Swiss Episcopal Conference had also requested in advance alternative forms of celebration. The committee published a brochure with textual and musical templates for Christmas reflection in families at home.
