Two penguins look into the distance to a sea of lights behind and embrace. The environmental organization Ocean Photography honored this image.
The story behind the stunning photo is bittersweet. German photographer Tobias Baumgaertner took the picture. Accompanied a penguin colony in Melbourne, Australia. During his work, the environmentalists introduced him to the penguin couple and their history.
I looked at the horizon for hours
The two have lost their long-term partners. Since then, they have met regularly and cleaned each other’s feathers. The penguins are said to have observed the Melbourne skyline together for hours that night.
It was not easy to take the photo, explains the photographer on Instagram. He accompanied the colony for three days before taking this photograph. But the effort and patience have paid off: Baumgaertner received the Community Choice Award from the Ocean Photography organization.
