The Spengler Cup will not be held in 2020. For the first time, the organizers dare to go on virtual ice.

The Spengler OK Cup turns necessity into virtue in the Corona year. After the cancellation of this year’s edition, the managers decided to hold the oldest ice hockey team tournament in the form of an e-tournament for the first time in its history.

From December 14-16, players could qualify for the group stage in a qualifying tournament. With HC Davos, HC Ambri Piotta, Team Canada, Ak Bars Kazan, Sparta Prague and KooKoo Kouvola, the same teams were at the start that would have participated in this year’s Spengler Cup.

With Sven Julmi and Kevin Würterle, two finalists were chosen on December 19 in the classic Spengler Cup mode. Julmi qualified with Ak Bars Kazan, Tim Hess with Team Canada.

The winner of the first eSpengler Cup will receive 6,000 francs in prizes and the second, 2,500 francs.

The final game will be streamed live on Stefan’s day starting at 2:55 pm srf.ch/sport and on the Sport app and will be accompanied by SRF commentator Steven Krucker and co-commentator Mike Müller, e-athlete by ZSC.

The “NHL” game has a Spengler Cup patch from 2017. This means that the tournament is also shown in-game in its original form. The mode was played up to 168,000 times a year.
