In week 51 (December 14-20), a total of 29,441 laboratory-confirmed cases were recorded compared to 30,162 the previous week. The number of reported cases was down 2.4 percent compared to the previous week.
The regional picture again shows a mixed picture: the incidence in the cantons and in the Principality of Liechtenstein ranged from 161 cases per 100,000 inhabitants per week in Appenzell Innerrhoden to 484 in Ticino and 625 in Liechtenstein.
By week 51, 864 hospital admissions related to laboratory confirmed Covid 19 disease were reported to the FOPH as of Wednesday (previous week: 891). Eighty-two percent of those hospitalized were 60 years or older.
In the intensive care units (IPS) there were 464 people with Covid 19 disease. The number has remained the same compared to the previous week. 365 Covid-19 patients were ventilated, which is slightly lower than the average for the previous week (375). Due to reporting delays, the number of hospitalizations according to the FOPH is still underestimated.
In the period under review, 557 deaths related to a laboratory-confirmed Covid 19 disease were reported (previous week at the same time: 512). They were distributed in almost all the cantons and Liechtenstein. However, according to the BAG, there are large cantonal differences from 0 to 12.7 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. Despite expected late reports, the death toll is expected to stagnate at week 51.
According to the weekly report, 241,241 tests were performed (72 percent PCR and 28 percent rapid antigen tests). That’s 15 percent more than the previous week. The proportion of positive tests fell to 13.0 percent (previous week: 15.3).
According to reports from 21 cantons and Liechtenstein, a total of 26,367 people were in isolation and 26,199 in quarantine on Tuesday. In addition, 1,292 people were in quarantine after entering from a country with a higher risk of infection.
