15 Pardons Tuesday, 29 Pardons Wednesday: Shortly before the end of his term, the president-elect of the United States continues to forgive his loyal companions. Donald Trump (74) pardoned the former president of his campaign team, Paul Manafort (71), and his confidant Roger Stone (68) on Wednesday night (local time). He also pardoned the real estate businessman Charles Kushner (66), the father of his adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner (39).
Manafort had been sentenced to several years in prison for tax evasion and bank fraud. Trump had already issued a prison sentence in July for Stone, who was convicted of Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.
Stone was sentenced to more than three years in prison in February for, among other things, false testimony and obstruction of justice. Kushner, in turn, had ended up in prison for tax evasion, among other things. He has already served his sentence, but with the pardon his criminal record is subsequently erased.
Again and again controversial pardons
Republican Trump was defeated by Democrat Joe Biden (78) in the November 3 elections, but will remain president with full powers until January 20. Former presidents like Democrats Bill Clinton, 74, and Barack Obama, 59, used the right to grant pardons until their last days in office.
Also at that time there were always controversial cases; however, they were not persons who had been convicted of crimes directly related to the president or his electoral campaign. (nim / SDA)
