Christmas outdoors: the party in the forest can be harmful for animals – News

Christmas in the woods by Corona: a good idea. But not only. For the sake of the animals, you must follow some rules.

Drinking mulled wine for once by the fireplace instead of in the kitchen at home, meeting family members for a walk in the woods instead of at the living room table – that’s the advice of the authorities to Christmas does not degenerate into a general occasion of over-propagation.

But the official council also has its pitfalls. Foresters care about wildlife. Because if more and more people gather outdoors, this can have negative side effects. “Wild animals also need the peace and quiet that humans seek in the forest,” says Bruno Röösli, head of the Lucerne canton forest department.

It depends on the winter peace: three hinds in search of food.

Celebrating Christmas Eve in the woods can even be a very bad idea. Because at dusk and at night, animals reacted particularly sensitively to disturbances. Especially at a time that is already stressful for them. “In winter, food is limited, the animals are in hibernation or hibernation and have to reduce their activities and their metabolism,” explains Röösli.

Each alteration means additional stress and loss of energy. That weakens the animals.

Despite all reservations: you don’t want to ban people from staying in the forest. But it is important that you follow some rules:

  • If possible, stay on the main routes.
  • Avoid especially dense stands of spruce and fir trees. They are usually refuge areas for deer.
  • Establish yourself in official places.
  • If you want to place decorations, please only on the trees by the side of the road.
  • Avoid loud music and bright lighting.
  • Don’t leave garbage in the forest.
  • Keep dogs on a leash.
  • Take a look at the weather report: when gusts of wind are the order of the day, you better not go to the forest.
  • Follow the instructions on the official signs.

If the rules are followed, nothing will stand in the way of Christmas fun in the woods. Then the only thing that matters is that the people are well distributed. Because “the forest must not become a fairground”, says Lucerne forester Bruno Röösli and has one last piece of advice ready: “It is better if you walk through the forest from home”.
