The vaccine is an early Christmas gift. Today Wednesday, the first person in Switzerland was vaccinated against the coronavirus in the canton of Lucerne. Other people at risk should receive the substance this month. There are more than 100,000 cans available, and starting in January, 250,000 more will be delivered each month.
The road back to normality seems to have been paved: By the summer, anyone who wants to can get vaccinated, said Anne Lévy, director of the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). But are there enough volunteers who want to get vaccinated?
“More likely to end the pandemic”
To prevent the virus from spreading completely, 60 to 70 percent of the population must be vaccinated. Only then is herd immunity achieved.
Helmut Dietl, Professor of Business Administration at the University of Zurich, therefore proposes a vaccination voucher. He explains to the free newspaper “20 Minuten”: “If you paid 1,000 Swiss francs for each person who is vaccinated, it would be much more likely that the number of people vaccinated will be reached to end the pandemic.”
Herd immunity would cost the Swiss state 5.3 billion Swiss francs, if the vaccine is effective in 90 percent of people. The large sum is well invested: on the one hand, because vaccinated people can go back to leading normal lives. On the other hand, because the vaccination premium increases purchasing power.
BAG bets on the vaccination campaign
Switzerland is currently purchasing the first vaccine from Biontech / Pfizer. This must be given twice per person to be effective.
To ensure that people also get the second vaccine, Dietl suggests: 250 francs are paid after the first injection, 750 francs only after the second.
The BAG currently does not want to know anything about said vaccination premium. Instead, they want to “sensitize” the population with a vaccination campaign and convince them of the benefits of vaccination. The government wants to prevent discrimination against unvaccinated people. Vaccination is voluntary, the BAG emphasized over the weekend. (ha)
