Mega traffic jam in the English Channel: 2,180 vehicles have been parked at the disused Manston airport, a spokeswoman for the local government of the county of Kent, in the south-east of England, said Tuesday night. About 630 more trucks were parked on various lanes of the M20 motorway between London and the Port of Dover. Trade associations even took over 4,000 trucks that are currently waiting to leave.
The border has been closed since Monday night. With this, France responded to the rapid spread of a new variant of the corona virus discovered in Britain. Starting this Wednesday, vehicles must be allowed to cross the English Channel again, if drivers present a negative corona test.
Millions of fresh food spoiled
British media reported that truckers complained of inhumane conditions such as a lack of sanitary facilities. Millions of fresh food has already gone bad, traders stressed. Authorities brought mobile food stands and toilets to the area and promised to deliver more Dixie toilets Wednesday morning.
It was still unclear Tuesday night when it would actually continue for waiting drivers. British Transport Minister Grant Shapps stressed that the government would inform transport companies. (SDA)
