Paula Dalla Corte (19) has been one of the most sought-after people in German-speaking countries since her victory last Sunday in “The Voice of Germany”. VIEW felt that too. Actually, a Skype interview was arranged with the student from Tägerwilen TG on Monday at 4pm, but nothing came out. After multiple emails, unanswered calls and a two-and-a-half hour wait, the interview was postponed to Tuesday. 40 minutes after the agreed time, Paula Dalla Corte finally called, in a bathrobe. She quickly put on a sweater, did her hair, and then we could get started. Time was short because Thurgau’s wife had just returned from an afternoon of crafts with her boyfriend and family; I wanted to get back there quickly.
BLICK: It’s good that it still works. Right now, he’s overwhelmed by inquiries from the press. How is that for you
Paula Dalla Court: Sorry for the delay! Yes, it’s great because I attract attention for my talent and passion. I love to sing about everything and I also like to talk about it.
But?
Today was very stressful because the same questions keep coming up. I didn’t even verify that I still have an interview because I was still crafting with friends and family. Then I thought: Oh man, another round.
On Sunday you were the first Swiss woman to win “The Voice of Germany.” How do you feel after your victory?
I was very surprised. It feels very surreal. I am very happy to have received so much support. I would love to thank you all.
What went through your head when you heard your name?
I stood there and thought: What am I really doing there? I didn’t go to “The Voice of Germany”, my dad signed me up. I went there to receive criticism and to be on stage. It’s brutal how far I’ve come.
Were you nervous in the final?
In the end I was no longer nervous, but it was very important to me how my performances were received.
How should they be?
In the finale, I wanted to inspire people with my performance. I wanted them to feel comfortable watching me on television and not be afraid that I would sing badly. My goal was simply to comply.
You did it. With 43.79 percent of the vote, he clearly won. How do you explain that?
I have no idea. I can only thank you. It’s amazing that I was able to bring people with my style and my singing.
As a Swiss woman, do you think it was more difficult for you in a German talent show?
Not at all. Many candidates from Austria also came. There were even people who tried to join from Manhattan. The group was confused.
How did you celebrate your victory?
Talents just start each other off. It was very nice and quiet. The next day I flew straight home. I was so happy to come home and hug my favorite people there.
Weren’t you sad that you couldn’t celebrate with your family?
He was so excited that it didn’t matter that he couldn’t celebrate the victory. It was also nice that there wasn’t a big wrecking party. I was so exhausted that day. I can still feel it now.
How did you celebrate with your family?
My family met me at the airport and hugged me. They were very proud of me. Now I am still with my boyfriend and he is also very proud. That is so cute.
You don’t really show emotions to the outside world. Are you also reserved that way in private?
I’m already very excited, but I prefer to cry alone. I have a hard time crying in front of other people. I’m a little screwed up. This is why people probably think that I am intangible. But it’s nice to go through life a bit dreamy.
Do you have the feeling that everything could be too much for you?
No, not too much. I’m actually pretty laid back, but it’s just the general situation. I was in Berlin for three weeks, I worked hard and practiced a lot. Then yesterday after my flight I was greeted by a television crew from Zurich when I really just wanted to hug my dad. Christmas holidays would be really cool now, just a short break. Then I’ll be ready again.
What will happen to you after this break?
That I still don’t know. I’ll just press my music now and see how people think of it.
You already have a single that you recorded with your coaches Samu Haber and Rea Garvey. “Someone Better” has already reached number 1 on the German and Swiss iTunes charts. How is that for you
It’s great that so many people listen to my song. I also participated in the song with many lyrics and melodies, Samu and Rea too, of course. I’m glad it was well received. I let a little bit of Paula flow into the song.
