A ruling by the Constitutional Court on Monday made early elections necessary in Kosovo. The judges ruled that the election of current Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti, 44, by parliament on June 3 this year was illegal, media reported in Pristina late in the evening. Current president Vjosa Osmani (38) will meet with party representatives on Tuesday to set a date for the elections, he said.
The new election must be made within 40 days. Hoti was elected to the post in June with the votes of 61 of the 120 deputies. His party, the conservative Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), had previously ended the coalition with the leftist Vetevendosje under Prime Minister Albin Kurti to rule with other partners and a head of government within its own ranks.
As the constitutional judges ruled, Hoti’s election was illegal because one of the MPs who voted for him did not have the right to vote. The politician was convicted of fraud at the time of the vote. At the end of September, he began serving the prison sentence to which he was sentenced. (SDA)
