Petter Northug has been sentenced to 7 months in prison. Also, the Norwegian is no longer allowed to drive a car.
A court in Oslo sentenced former cross country skier Petter Northug to 7 months in prison. Northug, accepting the verdict, had admitted to driving too fast several times and storing drugs.
In August, police detained the 34-year-old because he was driving too fast. In one raid, police found 6 grams of cocaine and 0.6 grams of the party drug MDMA in his apartment.
With 200 in the 80s zone
In the court’s view, it was particularly serious that Northug had driven 4 times too fast, 3 times faster than 200 kilometers per hour in an 80s zone. In doing so, he put his life and the lives of others in unnecessary danger. The fact that he filmed himself doing it and sent these films to his friends could prompt others to do similar things, the judge said.
The two-time Olympic champion had only obtained his driver’s license in May 2019 after being sentenced to an ankle shackle sentence for driving in alcohol and driving a vehicle. Now Northug has to hand over his driver’s license forever.
