What a start to the slalom season: Ramon Zenhäusern wins the first race at Alta Badia.
The podium
- 1. Ramon Zenhäusern (SUI) 1: 45.43
- 2. Manuel Feller (AUT) +0.08
- 3. Marco Schwarz (AUT) +0.12
After the first race, Daniel Yule was the great Swiss trump card at Alta Badia. The 4 slalom winner of the World Cup was 27 hundredths behind surprising Italian Alex Vinatzer in second place. But Yule’s trump card didn’t stand out. The Valais fell back to seventh place.
In return, Ramon Zenhäusern entered the gap. The 28-year-old was only eighth at halftime, but Zenhäusern found the best line of the best riders in the second heat and took the lead. After that, competitors failed in ranks because of this brand, including Yule and Vinatzer. South Tyrol finally finished fourth in their home race.
Zenhäuser catches up with Giovanoli
For Zen houses it is the 2nd victory in a special slalom. Valais had previously triumphed at Kranjska Gora in March 2019. With two successes in this discipline, Zenhäusern is tied with Dumeng Giovanoli, who celebrated his two victories in 1968. Only Yule is in front of the Zen houses.
The other Swiss in points
- 7. Daniel Yule +0.47
- 8. Tanguy Nef +0.56
- 13. Loïc Meillard +0.89
- 17. Luca Aerni +1.10
- 29. Marc Rochat +1.99
For Yule, the relapse from second to seventh place is a disappointment. However, last season’s third best slalom rider impressively showed in the first race that he can be expected again this winter.
Tanguy Nef showed two solid runs and equaled his second best World Cup result as eighth. Loïc Meillard lost a lot of time in the first set after a serious mistake. In the afternoon, however, Valais hit a hot streak. Thanks to the third best execution time, Meillard improved from the 23rd intermediate position to the 13th final.
So it goes
For slalom stars, the night race will continue at Madonna di Campiglio on Tuesday. The 3rd slalom of the season will take place in Zagreb on January 6.
