Steep rise in infection leads to shutdown in Thailand

Thailand is considered an exhibition nation in terms of containment and control of Covid-19. Now there is again a mood of alarm. Hundreds of people tested positive for the virus in an industrial suburb of Bangkok. This despite the strict protection measures in the country and the borders, which remain practically closed. The Thai government quickly found a scapegoat: Guest workers who entered illegally are said to have introduced the virus.

Thai Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul (54) blames migrants from nearby Myanmar for the steepest rise in infections since the start of the pandemic. On Saturday 548 people tested positive for the virus in the Bangkok suburb of Samut Sakhon. Samut Sakhon is the center of Thailand’s fishing industry. Thousands of guest workers from Myanmar arrive there on fishing tractors or are employed in factories there and, according to Anutin, have brought the virus from their homeland.
