Disappointing Swiss in Engelberg
Swiss ski jumpers can do nothing for self-confidence at the World Cup at home in Engelberg. Gregor Deschwanden disappointed as 27th, Simon Ammann lost the points again.

Gregor Deschwanden got a bit lost in Titlis’s jumping race and looked for explanations for his worst result of the season. At the Ski Flying World Cup in Planica, he was not allowed to compete for the positive corona test of trainer Ronny Hornschuh, but earlier he had convinced in ninth place at the last World Cup in Nizhny Tagil. But home, once again, they didn’t do well.
The jumps at 120 and 119.5 m were only enough to achieve a meager 27th place in difficult tailwind conditions, brutally punishing even small errors. The 29-year-old from Lucerne had the feeling that he had “jumped more actively” in the second round. “It was really weird today with the wind,” he said on SRF.
He described his jumps as “so la la.” “That’s annoying because I want to be ahead.” Therefore, look forward to the second competition on Sunday. However, the Titlis ski jump has never done him good until now. The best result, an 18th place, was seven years ago and has never been better than 20th since.
For Simon Ammann, a 27th place would be a relief at this point. However, the four-time Olympic champion also did not find his way out of his sports bear market in Engelberg. At 39th (111m), the 39-year-old from Toggenburg missed qualifying for the final as clearly as Dominik Peter, who was not half his age (42nd / 105.5m). Ammann was downright fatalistic and said the result shows how difficult the situation is right now. After all, he thinks he has figured out what needs to be changed when planning a new jumping boot. The new part is not yet ready for use.
Halvor Egner Granerud is currently leaping into other dimensions. The Norwegian achieved his fourth consecutive victory in a World Cup with flights of 133.5 and 138 m. He distanced himself from three-time Olympic champion Kamil Stoch by 2.2 points. For the Pole it would have been the third success in the canton of Obwalden.
