The Zurich government councilor, Jacqueline Fehr (57), has repeatedly drawn attention to the crisis in the Crown, with statements that were mostly grinding for the skeptics. She was also seen as one of those government councilors who was held accountable for the fact that the canton only tightened for a long time.
In the summer she was extremely critical of the mask requirement as a “blanket measure.”
In another tweet, he compared mouth and nose protection in times of pandemic to the Islamic veil: “Welcome to Niqab for all?”
Now Fehr is deviating from this path, as he writes on his blog. “I myself have assessed some situations correctly and others incorrectly in recent months. He was right about some positions and wrong about others. There were moments when I found the right words and those in which the tone was not right, “said the Social Democrat.
“I’m sorry”
It was probably not ideally expressed. For example, their question marks about the requirement for masks in stores weren’t a no to masks. “Wearing a mask makes sense and is necessary wherever we meet a lot of people.”
Rather, you meant that the mask alone is useless. “Looking back, I have to admit that I couldn’t bring this differentiated view into the mask discussion.” Furthermore, it was not a good time to publicly cast doubt on official actions. “I puzzled and upset a lot of people. I’m sorry.”
Don’t downplay it, says Fehr
Above all, he regrets having left the impression on some of them that they take danger very little seriously, that they look down on the disease and are indifferent to the pain that has arisen. “I can only assure you: the opposite is the case.”
He also regrets calling his blog, which started in May, “fehr thinks.” “That seemed like an appropriate idea at the time,” he writes. For her, it is important to consider political problems from different perspectives, even the non-obvious ones. But the development of the lateral thinker movement worried her more and more. “I can no longer write with this tag,” emphasizes Fehr. She wants nothing to do with lateral thinkers.
Fehr calls for a traffic light system
In his article, Fehr also talks about federalism, the cantonal league spirit that made people feel very unsafe during the crisis. “Everything went well from afar,” admits Fehr and calls for mechanisms to regulate the relationship between the Confederation and the cantons – and between the cantons themselves – in times of crisis. The federal government should only be in the lead when national regulations make sense, such as the obligation to wear a mask on public transportation or regulating major events. “The cantons, on the other hand, are more competent when it comes to matters relating to schools, hospitals or prisons.”
For all other areas, from store opening hours, curfew to the limit of participants in events, a traffic light system based on the avalanche hazard map model is needed. This requires a Swiss-wide agreement on the key figures that make a canton or region a red, orange or green zone.
The federal government must now build such a system together with the cantons. And fast: the system should be available in January, when the measures likely to be imposed by the Federal Council on Friday are relaxed again. “Without a clear and transparent system, there is a risk of renewed confusion and the risk that the authorities will play completely with its credibility.” (sf / dbn)
