As part of a review, Ikea’s forestry and lumber procurement specialists conducted a routine check on the Chinese company in fall 2020, it said. The falsified guarantees of origin were discovered.
The non-verifiable wood used by this supplier accounted for 0.28 percent of Ikea’s total wood consumption in financial year 2020. In Switzerland, the supplier has sold almost 30,000 items.
Vilto, Förhöja, Bekväm, Norden, Fintrop and Norraker products were affected. The offense was a violation of the furniture dealer’s guidelines, he said.
In relation to incorrectly declared wood, Ikea made headlines a few weeks ago: in mid-October, the Federal Department of Economics, Education and Research (EAER) opened criminal administrative proceedings against the furniture giant in two cases on suspicion of repeated false statements. The trigger for this was an announcement from the Bruno Manser Fund in late August on the WBF or the Federal Office for Consumer Affairs (BFK).
Ikea Switzerland rejected the allegations at the time. Management member Aurel Hosennen said on Swiss radio SRF that it happens over and over again that labels are missing from furniture stores. The reason for this is that these are attached by hand at Ikea. At each branch, 80 to 100 labels are replaced daily because they are lost. Hosennen emphasized in the radio report that Ikea Switzerland had the information. “We know each product and each supplier what wood they are working with and where it comes from.” Only legally harvested wood is used in the supply chain.
In May, the furniture store was also criticized for allegedly having or illegally logging wood from Ukraine and Romania in its supply chain. A British non-governmental organization had made the accusations and the “Kassensturz” of Swiss television SRF had reported it in June.
In Switzerland, wood and wood products must be declared in accordance with the relevant federal ordinance. Both the type of wood and its origin must be specified. The BFK monitors compliance in the company and provides information on results once a year.
