First cash, then gold bars – the perpetrators stole a considerable amount.

Pensioners are often pressured by the wrong police officers to deliver the requested money quickly.

It’s a nasty scam, a bold approach. Once again, bogus police officers have stolen money from a retiree. The scammers managed to steal more than a quarter of a million francs. The Basel pensioner was poorer by an impressive 270,000 francs after the incident.

The perpetrators proceeded as we know from past representations by the police: for several days the woman was pressured by a “criminal investigator” and several “policemen” with phone calls. They also told her that she was not allowed to speak to anyone about it and that she was constantly being watched.

Finally, the woman followed instructions by first depositing gold bullion and money behind a park bench in Birsfelden. A few days later he was instructed to bring more gold bars to Freiburg im Breisgau and put them under a vehicle parked there. The last time a man appeared at his house, to whom he handed over the remaining gold bars.

With good persuasion over the phone, you build a trusting relationship with retirees.

The police expressly warn against this type of phone call. The “fake cops” now speak not only standard German, but also Swiss German. With a fake phone number and good persuasion they try to win the trust of the retirees. If this is successful, they repeatedly ask their potential victims to personally bring the money to another city or abroad for security reasons and hand it over to a “police officer” or deposit it in a discreet place.

In addition, people are scared by fake police officers because armed robbers are allegedly going to steal money stored at home, or because a relative has caused a serious traffic accident and is arrested if the bus is not paid.

The Basel-Stadt prosecutor’s office also advises, after the latest incident, to notify the police of suspicious calls or contacts on the street.
