Borussia Dortmund’s Hansi film? This is how Favre’s successor, Edin Terzic, works
A new era has begun at Borussia Dortmund. Lucien Favre has not been a coach since Sunday. Former assistant coach Edin Terzic should lead the team until at least the end of the season.
For the baptism of fire, Terzic, 38, has two straight away games in Werder Bremen (Tuesday) and Union Berlin (Friday). That does not facilitate the debut. After the last three league games without a win, BVB cannot afford another setback.

At his first press conference as Borussia Dortmund’s new coach, Terzic answered questions from journalists present on Monday afternoon.
The Croatian, who was born in the Sauerland, admitted that it was an “incredible situation” for him. “I was born 30 kilometers from here and I was nine years old for the first time in the stadium.” It is something “very special to get up in the morning and think about black and yellow football,” he said: “I am shaped by what happened here in the past.”
Edin Terzic: virtues and words that are surely like oil for the BVB fans
Terzic, who referred to himself as a BVB “fan” at the press conference, demanded that its professionals be willing to defend themselves if things don’t go well: “We have shown so many good things in the past.” We have to remember many things , we have to preserve them, “he said. However, he stressed that he too had to put on his shoes for the 5-1 loss to Stuttgart (“That wasn’t Borussia Dortmund”).
He spoke of “faith”, “courage”, “will”, “fighting together”. These are virtues and words that Dortmund fans have missed recently, most of which have always been strangers to the Swiss coach in Favre’s last two years. From the point of view of many BVB fans, Favre’s reserved, almost pious manner and corresponding football style simply did not match the black and yellow. That should change again with Terzic as head coach.
He was a bit surprised that he became Favre’s successor almost overnight. Until a few years ago I would not have dared to dream that I could be here in such a position. But there is no trace of nervousness. For them there was no time before their debut anyway, as Terzic pointed out.
From Favre to Terzic: striking parallels to Kovac’s firing
Because it should quickly fix the imbalance in BVB. He is supported by former U17 coach Sebastian Geppert and talent coach Otto Addo. Before Christmas, Terzic, who had already worked in Borussia’s junior division from 2010 to 2013, will be on the bench as boss three times in eight days. Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc on Monday called him a “proven stuntman”, a “good guy” with “style and emotion.”

With Terzic, the club had secured internally at an early stage in the event that the sporting situation required Favre’s dismissal. As managing director Hans-Joachim Watzke told “Bild”, Borussia Terzic brought him back in 2018 so that “no gap will arise” in a situation like the current one. Even then, they would have known that Terzic is “our man when the going gets tough.”
All of this is somewhat reminiscent of the change from Niko Kovac to Hansi Flick at FC Bayern Munich almost exactly a year ago. Flick was also an assistant coach and after a 1: 5 applause, at the time against Eintracht Frankfurt, it was intended to be an interim solution.
Suddenly, the record-breaking champions rushed from victory to victory with Flick. At the end of the season there was the triple, the former assistant to the national coach Joachim Löw has become an indispensable part of Bayern.
The example of Hansi Flick, who was to some extent Bayern Munich’s jackpot in a similar situation, “played no role” in BVB’s decision on Terzic, according to Watzke. Miracles such as a triple victory are not expected of him. The new head coach should at least help secure the season’s goals, especially a place in the Champions League.
New BVB coach: who is Edin Terzic?
The movie comparison also lags a bit at one point. Because unlike Jogi’s former assistant and DFB sports director Flick, Terzic doesn’t have a big name in German soccer yet.
At BVB, the former regional league player worked in the youth field for years before working as an assistant coach with Slaven Bilic at Besiktas Istanbul (Süper Lig) and West Ham United (Premier League). In England, Terzic also acquired the Uefa Pro Coaching License. Prior to that, he assisted then-Croatia national coach Bilic at the 2012 European Championships as an opponent analysis assistant. Terzic had previously worked as a Borussia scout since 2010, was an assistant coach for the U17, U19 and the second team with Hannes Wolf.

As an active footballer, the attacker came to Regionalliga West, where he scored seven goals in 31 games for BV Cloppenburg in 2008/09 as team-mate with André Breitenreiter. Before that, he played for FC Iserlohn, Westfalia Herne, Wattenscheid 09 and Borussia Dröschede. Terzic knows a lot about soccer in the Ruhr area. During his career, he studied sports science at the Ruhr University in Bochum.
He should reportedly stand out clearly from his former boss Favre, be closer to the pros. In his own way, Terzic is more likely to be with Jurgen Klopp than with Favre. He is considered emotional, forthright and popular with the players around star forward Erling Haaland.
Terzic is well received by BVB professionals
The trade magazine “Kicker” reports that Terzic often had to slow down in training sessions and meetings out of respect for his former boss Favre. The magazine is based on inside information. Terzic basically defends other football ideas besides the patient Monsieur Favre. Terzic wants to see more aggressive football, as well as coordinated and aggressive pressure and fundamentally faster play.

From a “generator of ideas who speaks in the subjunctive”, as his previous role delineated, he becomes the boss himself. The neat, approachable 38-year-old shirt-sleeved appearance at his first press conference wants to “adjust” the mindset of his professionals, as he put it. With his style and ideas, which he no longer only has to formulate in the subjunctive, he gets along well, as the “Kicker” report continues.
BVB: Speculation on Rose: Is Terzic just a stopgap solution or even more than that?
It will be exciting if the BVB professionals will implement their idea of football against Werder Bremen and how they will do it. Likewise, if Terzic can continue as head coach beyond the summer of 2021.
Michael Zorc did not want to go into this at Monday’s press conference. There are still at least 26 competitive matches left until then. The main objective is to get back on the road to success. “What comes next is a long way off,” he said.
According to constant media reports, Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Marco Rose could also be a problem. According to information from the newspaper “Bild”, the 44-year-old has a release clause for the foals after the season. Rose has been a part of coach rumors at Borussia Dortmund for a long time.
At the end of October, Mönchengladbach’s sporting director Max Eberl had already described speculation about a possible transfer of Rose to Dortmund as disrespectful. Rose said at the time that she generally didn’t comment on such things. Maybe there is none of that.

And maybe Terzic does his job so well that the big promotion follows with a long-term contract, so there is no threat of a dispute between the two Borussia. And for BVB it would certainly be worse than a Westphalian movie effect called Edin Terzic. (as / with material from dpa and sid)
