On Sunday, Alain Berset (48) was invited to the RTS program “7.30pm” and was interviewed by presenter Jennifer Covo (42). The journalist also asked critical questions. For example, she wanted to know from the Federal Council why they wait so long for a vaccine to be approved or asked about Berset’s alleged disagreements with Ueli Maurer (70). While Berset also said aid packages would be arriving for companies in need, Covo cut him off: “For many, this is not enough. You need money on the table now. “
The program generated a great response in French-speaking Switzerland. A shit storm hit the journalist, especially on social media. Terms like “aggressive”, “rude” or “no manners” are harmless in comparison. Numerous comments went below the belt, attacking Covo in a nasty way.
“We take criticism very seriously”
This went so far that RTS even had to make a statement about the broadcast. Pierre-Olivier Volet, deputy editor-in-chief of the news editorial office, condemned numerous comments in the strongest possible terms. “We take criticism very seriously … but numerous comments were aimed simply at insulting our moderator and we cannot accept that,” the letter says. “We were particularly surprised by the sexist nature of many reports.”
The publishers are even considering taking legal action against the numerous insults and threats. “As journalists, we want to contribute to the debate and focus on Swiss democracy without losing mutual respect.” Volet asks the perpetrators of the insults to remove them themselves before reporting them.
