136 new cases were registered on Tuesday, 77 more than the previous day. Additionally, two other people died as a result of Covid 19 disease.

So far, a total of 6,875 residents in the canton of Basel-Stadt have been infected with the corona virus. Of these, according to pandemic statistics on canton’s website 5863, they were considered recovered on Tuesday.

The number of people who have died from Covid-19 so far increased with the two new deaths to a total of 112. According to the health department, 11 people between the ages of 64 and 92 have died from the consequences of Covid-19 since last Friday, 9 of them in the hospital, 2 in a nursing home.

On Tuesday there were 900 infected people in isolation, 11 more than the previous day. The number of hospitalized patients increased from 5 to 142. Of these, 93 had their residence in the canton of the city (-2).

A total of 17 patients with unchanged Covid 19 disease had to be treated in an intensive care unit. On Tuesday, 90 residents from 12 different nursing homes had a positive test result.

The numbers in the Basel area

The canton of Baselland reported 178 new infections with the coronavirus and three more deaths from Covid-19 on Tuesday. The government considers tightening the protection measures to be announced, but does not want to anticipate the new orders from the Federal Council scheduled for Friday.

With the 178 positive cases recently registered, the total number of infected so far has risen to 8,899, as can be seen from the cantonal case statistics. The canton currently assumes 1743 active cases. 63 of them are in hospital treatment (+1). Four patients (-2) require intensive care.

The death toll from Covid 19 rose from three to 109 on Tuesday. The incidence of 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants rose to 737.7 and has now been above the 700 mark since last Thursday.

The Basel government believes that the number of positive test results should be reduced and also the high occupancy of intensive care places, which has been developing for almost eight weeks, as announced on Tuesday. The current state is not sustainable for all those affected.

The Basel government is waiting

For the moment, however, the government does not want to make a decision on further toughening of protection measures. They assume that the Federal Council will order it on Friday. If, contrary to expectations, this is not the case, the government has prepared additional cantonal measures such as temporary closures. The executive does not reveal any details.

However, the government has decided to reduce catering and taxi fees by 50 percent for 2020 and 2021. These industries are disproportionately affected due to Corona’s measures and can only exercise the rights associated with the respective permits until a limited degree, he says.
