The architects Herzog & de Meuron have been commissioned to remodel the bank building. Work should start in the fall.
UBS is planning a new building for its flagship building on Paradeplatz in Zurich. Basel architecture studio Herzog & de Meuron gained interest in the renovation, as the large bank said on Monday at the request of the AWP news agency. She thus confirmed a report from “Neue Zürcher Zeitung”.
According to a bank spokeswoman, construction is expected to begin in fall 2021. The conversion should take “ideally” three years. This would mean a new opening in late 2024. Because the 1950s façade is listed, the building will look relatively similar from the outside in the future.
Café on the ground floor
After the renovation, the bank wants to open the ground floor completely to the public and, for example, install shops or a cafeteria, similar to what is already the case at the Zürcher Kantonalbank on Bahnhofstrasse. The inner courtyard of the building should also be open to the public.
Shops, restaurants, galleries and even pop-up deals can be conceived, writes NZZ. In addition, a pavilion will be built on the roof, to which a public restaurant could be moved. UBS intends to continue to use the intermediate floors.
The inner courtyard will also be open to the population in the future and will be ecological. Even a green facade in front of the Paradeplatz is being discussed. How much is really possible with a listed building remains to be clarified.
The last renovation of the UBS building took place about 25 years ago. Among other things, some static measures are needed to improve earthquake safety. The building should also use about a third less energy in the future.
