Briton Anthony Joshua, 31, successfully defended his WBO, IBF, WBA and IBO belts. In front of 1,000 spectators in London, 39-year-old Kubrat Pulew missed his second World Cup chance after losing to Wladimir Klitschko in 2014 at Wembley Arena.

This opens the way for Joshua for a union fight with WBC world champion Tyson Fury. It remains to be seen if the fight between the two Englishmen will actually take place in the next year. More recently, the Joshua party had accused Fury time and again of avoiding the duel.

Joshua cautious at first

Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, had predicted a knockout against Pulew in the first 6 rounds. His protégé started out cautiously, then showed off his entire repertoire in the third round. Pulew fell twice and was about to be knocked out

But the Bulgarian recovered and even won the sixth round. In the ninth round Joshua managed to get past with his right hook, then finished the fight with a tough fastball.
